SUMMARY:Decarbonising Energy Use in European Buildings
DESCRIPTION:RES4BUILD is pleased to announce an in-person workshop on Wednesday 29 March 2023 in Brussels\, Belgium. The event\, titled “Decarbonising Energy Use in European Buildings: technical\, financial and social drivers and barriers”\, will take place from 10:00-15:00.  \n\n\n\nBuildings account for more than 40% of the final energy consumption in Europe\, most of which is still supplied by fossil fuels. Phasing out fossil fuel use in buildings can help address many of Europe’s most pressing challenges including climate change\, air pollution and dependency on imported fuels. \n\n\n\nHowever\, achieving this future requires the rapid upscaling of impactful\, energy-efficient solutions. Feasible solutions addressing the technological\, market and social aspects of the challenge exist\, such as those developed during the RES4BUILD project\, but much more needs to be done. \n\n\n\nThe workshop on 29 March 2023 in Brussels will bring together research\, industry\, policymakers\, and end users to help identify the developments and conditions that are needed to accelerate this decarbonisation and meet EU policy objectives. The agenda will follow three key themes: \n\n\n\n\nLatest technological solutions and innovations to enable the delivery of EU policy objectives.\n\n\n\nAddressing drivers and barriers to develop realistic recommendations for adaptations of market and regulatory conditions to accelerate the transition.\n\n\n\nInteractive session on end-user perspectives to better implement these changes.\n\n\n\n\nThe workshop is free but attendance is limited. To register see: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/decarbonising-energy-use-in-european-buildings-tickets-547594809817 \n\n\n\nDownload the full agenda here: https://res4build.eu/results

SUMMARY:HYDRO 2022
DESCRIPTION:The French hydropower and dam industry welcomes the world hydro community to Strasbourg. After successful events in Lyon (2009) and Bordeaux (2015)\, delegates will have the opportunity to visit the Grand Est region\, where EDF operates 10 hydro schemes on the Rhine\, one of which (Vogelgrun) is a demonstrator project for the EU-funded XFLEX scheme. \n\n\n\nThe extensive experience of supporting organizations EDF and CNR\, both within France and abroad\, will be well reflected in the programme\, and on the study tours. \n\n\n\nFrance currently (2021) has around 25 732 MW of hydro capacity in operation\, and a further 822 MW of hydro at various stages of development. Hydro generation increased to more than 65 TWh in 2020. \n\n\n\nThe two most important recently completed schemes were the addition of a 240 MW surface powerplant at the 320 MW La Coche pumped-storage scheme in the Isère valley\, and the 92 MW Romanche Gavet scheme in the southwest\, where six surface plants and five dams have been replaced by one underground powerplant. The country plans to double its renewable energy over the next ten years\, with hydro\, solar and wind schemes. \n\n\n\nStrasbourg\, the capital city of the Grand Est region of France\, formerly Alsace\, is also the formal seat of the European Parliament. On the border of Germany\, and also close to Switzerland (and very close to many hydro plants on the Rhine) it is an ideal meeting point for the hydro industry. Its culture and architecture blend both German and French influences. \n\n\n\nThe newly refurbished Centre de la Musique et des Congrès is a state-of-theart venue\, modern and spacious\, and has impressive measures in place for hosting a safe conference during the COVID recovery period.

SUMMARY:Carbon pricing for heat
DESCRIPTION:The energy price crisis has focused the need to replace the use of fossil fuels for used for heating by renewables and energy efficiency.Buildings account for 36% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of these emissions come from the use of fossil fuels for space heating and hot water.Unlike other sectors of the economy\, these emissions do not have a carbon price applied to them. The European Commission has proposed extending the EU Emissions Trading System to cover heating in buildings as well as a Climate Social Fund to ensure adequate finance is available to replace fossil heat with that from sustainable and lower cost renewable energy solutions.Panel discussion: -Mechthild Wörsdörfer\, DG Energy (tbc) -Jytte Guteland\, Member of the European Parliament -Dörte Fouquet\, European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF) -Samuel Thomas\, Regulatory Assistance Project -Michael Bloss\, Member of the European Parliament Moderator: Sanjeev Kumar\, EGEC Head of PolicyRegisterContact: Sanjeev Kumar\, EGEC Head of Policy // s.kumar@egec.org

SUMMARY:Litigation for Mitigation: Constitutional Dimensions of Renewable Energy and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:WWEAwebinar in collaboration with the WWEA Legal Working Group and EREF  \n\n\n\nWednesday\, 2 June 2021\, 13-15 h Central European Summer Time \n\n\n\nGermany’s Federal Constitutional Court took a landmark decision by qualifying the German climate law as unconstitutional as it does not provide sufficient protection against the impact of climate change\, in particular for future generations. The decision implies a constitutional\, individual right against the government to protect the climate. \n\n\n\nThe WWEAwebinar will present details of the decisions by the German Constitutional Court and will discuss its implications\, for the energy sector and internationally. \n\n\n\nImportant questions will be discussed: \n\n\n\nHow far does this groundbreaking decision impact the legal situation in the rest of Europe\, and in other parts of the world? Is there a new paradigm emerging – environmental standards as part of basic or even human rights? What are the implications for the energy sector and energy related law?Which similar decisions have been taken by courts in other jurisdictions? Is it worthwhile to develop an international litigation strategy for effective climate change mitigation and for accelerated shift towards renewable energy?\n\n\n\nLegal experts from Germany\, Europe and Australia will discuss the current situation and potential strategies as well as prospects of future action.

SUMMARY:Citizen Energy – making it real
DESCRIPTION:Many EU member states presently face the challenge of transposing the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) and the Internal Market in Electricity Directive (IEMD) to national legislation. In the context of a webinar on November 17\, 2020\, several European organisations and projects presented challenges and opportunities of the transposition process with a specific focus on the issue of energy communities. \nChaired by MEP Jutta Paulus\, the event with the title „Citizen Energy – making it real” was especially intended for national government focal points. The webinar first addressed the national obligations as well as the targets and the monitoring of the RED II and IEMD transposition. Subsequently\, four speakers focused on specific issues with regard to energy communities. Ludwig Karg of EC Bridge introduced relevant classes of energy communities and presented topics and recommendations for the transposition process. Jens Lowitzsch of Viadrina University\, representing the SCORE project at the event\, looked into possible traps to avoid when transposing\, presenting examples from Italy and Austria. Molly Walsh of Friends of the Earth Europe explored the barriers and potentials of the “enabling framework” by looking at the early transposers Greece an Ireland and their approaches. Finally\, Dirk Vansintjan of REScoop.eu rounded off the picture by presenting a grassroots perspective on the transposition process. \nMore than 60 legislators from EU-27 countries attended the online event. Due to the big success\, the webinar will be repeated in January 2021. \nThe event was organised by the European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF). The presentations can be downloaded here. \nDue to large demand\, a second workshop on this topic will be organised soon.
