We are writing to you to express our deep concerns regarding the current discussions on the
European 2030 climate and energy framework and the State aid guidelines for energy and
environment.
In this year of European elections, while 70%
1
of European citizens think Renewable Energy Sources
(RES) should be prioritised now, we call on you, the European Heads of State and Government, to
make the right choice at the European Council on 21-22 of March and to call for a new ambitious
binding 2030 minimum RES target at national level and for a new and ambitious energy efficiency
target.
The European Commission in its Communication on Energy prices and costs in Europe
2
clearly
confirms that the increase in energy prices is not due to more renewable energy in Europe. A report
3
by high-profile economists shows Europe’s competitiveness is not dependent on its energy prices
and the EU climate policy does with good design not have an overwhelming impact on the energyintensive industry.
